2006 Waugh Cellars Petite Sirah, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma
One
of the most exciting parts of my job as winemaker is coming across a
new vineyard that I know will produce great fruit. I found such a
vineyard in 2002, planted to Petite Sirah, not far from where we grow
our Zinfandel in the Dry Creek region of Sonoma.
While the
vineyard location was ideal to grow this very powerful grape, it became
clear that changes needed to be made in order for the vines to grow to
full potential. I completely changed the trellis system and re-trained
the vines to produce a high-end, impeccably balanced wine, something
not often found in Petite Sirah.
The first full harvest arrived
in 2003 but for the last three vintages, I sold off the fruit, not
because it was flawed but simply because it just wasn't perfect.
2006
however proved to have the ideal conditions I was looking for in
crafting this wine. Crop yields were down 20-25% from the monster
growth of 2005. The resulting fruit was a lighter, high-quality crop
with smaller berries of more concentrated flavors.
In short, a true Waugh Cellars wine.
So it's with great pleasure that I introduce a brand new wine to the
Waugh Cellars portfolio. The 2006 Petite Sirah. Only 200 cases were
produced, exclusively for you, the Friends of Waugh Cellars.
Cheers!

2006 Waugh Cellars Petite Sirah, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma
 |
Harvest Date: October 20, 2006 Brix: 24.8 Ph: 3.4 % Alcohol: 14.5 Production: 200 Cases
Created
from premium Dry Creek Valley fruit, which as you know is responsible
for explosive wines like the Waugh Cellars Zinfandel, this Petite Sirah
was meticulously cared for at every step of its development.
After
coming in from the vineyard, the fruit was slowly hand sorted to ensure
only the best clusters would make it into the wine, as Petite Sirah is
known for intense tannins. It was then cold soaked for five days before
fermentation and then placed in 40% new Oak to mature.
The
resulting wine is stunning in color and leads with espresso and coffee
bean on the nose with some spicy mint notes. This all gives way to a
concentrated sweet fruit aroma.
The wine hits the palate with
silky flavors of plum, cherry and black currant. The weight of this
powerful grape is not lost on the finish though, as the remaining
tannins coat the back palate for a long finish. $48.00/bottle
