Fourth Shipment

Six Degrees Vertical

2006-2008

As we've looked back over the years at the most popular Friends of Waugh Cellars shipments, themes seem to be the biggest hits.  Whether it's a collection of varietals from a single region like the Russian River Valley or our summer sampler pack of wines perfect for any outdoor grilling adventure, members seem to really enjoy those shipments with a unifying subject.

Nothing compares to a vertical tasting of the same wine across several vintages.  Not only does it allow you to really experience how a vineyard changes with time and the weather in a given year, but also how the vines themselves mature to produce what will hopefully be dynamic vintages year after year.

The Six Degrees vineyard, in a tiny section of Sonoma called Redwood Hill, is such a place.  We've been tending to this plot of earth for a decade now and our hard work has truly paid off with these last few vintages.  It doesn't hurt that the grape we use is the same one found in some of the finest French Bordeaux in the world or that Mother Nature seems to have taken a real liking to this part of Sonoma.

We know how much you enjoy this wine so we're thrilled to get it to you in time to place it on your holiday table and share with family and friends.

Best Wishes from Napa!

Cheers!

2006 Six Degrees

Harvest Date: October 25, 2006
Brix: 25
Ph: 3.58
% Alcohol: 14.5%
Production: 480 cases

Produced from a single vineyard sitting high above the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, this amazing 100% Cabernet Sauvignon continues to be coveted throughout the country.

The juice went through a 14-day fermentation with a 5-day extended maceration.  During this time, three punch downs a day were performed giving maximum skin to juice contact.  The wine was aged 18 months in 100% new French oak.

The 2006 Six Degrees is seductively smooth and reaches every part of the palate with exceptional balance. Aromas and flavors of sweet fruit and vanilla dominate with a tremendous integration of  oak.  Decant and enjoy watching this wine develop in your glass.

2007 Six Degrees

Harvest Date: October 11, 2007
Brix: 25.7
Ph: 3.65
% Alcohol: 14.5%
Production: 380 cases

2007 was all about balance. The vintage enjoyed a beautiful, temperate spring that allowed the fruit to set perfectly on the vine. This was followed by a gorgeous summer that stretched all the way through September with only one heat spike. The resulting wine is perhaps the best we've ever made.

The first thing you'll notice on this wine is the intense, deep purple hue it shows in the glass. There's only one word for that: Powerful. The fruit and oak combine harmoniously on the palate, offering the silky textures and flavors that have become the standard that defines Six Degrees.

2008 Six Degrees

Harvest Date: October 2, 2008
Brix: 25.4
pH: 3.60
Alcohol %: 14.5
Production:  200 Cases

2008 started out strange.  Heavy rain actually began in December but January found the vineyards in the kind of downpour that comes so fast and so hard that the water “runs off” and is not captured by the underground aquifers or wells.  This robbed the vines of any stored water it would need in the coming months.  Hundred degree temperatures in February brought on an early bud break and on April 20th we were hit with the worst frost Northern California has seen in over 30 years.  Although another big heat spike arrived in May, veraison finished early (late July) and temperatures calmed into the 80’s & 90’s throughout harvest, finishing off the growing year in a very positive way.

From my tasting notes:

Already amazingly seductive, with wonderfully rich aromas of cocoa, sweet oak and fully expressed fruit, this wine in no way lets up on the palate and delivers deep, multi-faceted flavors from first sip through finish. As is often the case with Six Degrees bottlings, it is so beautifully balanced that it invites early drinking, but while we would not fault you for ignoring this advice, we also strongly suggest patience as its best years lie down the road.
