Summer BBQ Pack

New Release: 2009 Riesling plus 2005 Zinfandel, 2007 Petite Sirah

Whether you're in Northern California or Northern Michigan, Houston, Dallas or along the Jersey Shore, there is nothing quite like summer.  Yes, it's hot.  Yes, the kids are out of school with "nothing to do" and you're trying to decide on the trip to the lake or the staycation.  Either way, there's no denying that leaving winter behind is a good thing.

Summer is a season to spend with family and friends, when the days are longer, the air sweeter and time seems to slow down just a little bit.

So with the temperatures on the rise, we decided to put together a Summer BBQ Pack, starting with a new release of our mouth watering Santa Barbara Riesling, the perfect wine to refresh you spirits after a hot day.  We're also including two easy drinking reds that will look great beside your grill, both from Sonoma and both delicious; the famed Waugh Zinfandel and our latest vintage of Petite Sirah.

We hope our wines find their place alongside the sunscreen and wet towels this summer, something you'll pour into the nearest glass, sit back with and watch the lazy days pass by with smiles all around.

Cheers!

2009 Waugh Cellars Riesling, Fazio Vineyard, Santa Barbara

Harvest Date:  October 10, 2009
Brix:  22.3
Ph:   2.95
% Alcohol:  10.5%
Production:  100 cases

Another amazing year for the Fazio's Riesling vineyard.  We have gone to the extreme in battling mold issues, which always arise with Riesling.  But proper vineyard management is what makes this grape so special when treated with just the right amount of TLC.

Over the last few years we have realized that maximizing sunlight and wind exposure to the fruit is the key to this vineyard's success.  And while in past vintages we have allowed the fruit to grow throughout the vines, our strategy for this vintage and beyond will be to space the fruit so that no two grape clusters will be in contact with another.

While this practice limits our production, it concentrates flavors and acidity to create an amazing wine.  In planting another acre this year we hope to produce at least 250 cases in the coming years.  Enjoy this stellar wine all summer long, with its incredible sweet notes and mouth watering acidity.

2005 Waugh Cellars Zinfandel, Dry Creek, Sonoma

528273598_waughzindrycreekvalley_1.jpg
Harvest Date: Sept. 29, 2005
Brix: 25.2
Ph: 3.55
% Alcohol: 14.5%
Production: 450 cases

Over the past five vintages of our Dry Creek Zinfandel not much has changed. And this is a good thing. Each year the vineyard produces stellar fruit and each year I follow the path that has made it one of our most popular wines.

Like the 2002 & 2003 vintages that put us on the map, 2005 was harvested a full week earlier than normal. It may not sound like much but what it meant was the fruit wanted off the vine early, concentrating flavors over a shorter period of time and creating those one of a kind fruit forward characteristics found in earlier vintages.

After a long 18 day fermentation and 7 days of extended juice to skin contact, the wine was put into 90% neutral oak and 10% new French oak and aged for 18 months before bottling.

This wine is clean and sweet on the nose with fresh raspberry and blackberry. The mouth feel is round and robust, filling the entire palate. A velvety soft and creamy texture precedes an extremely well balanced and long, wonderful finish. Built with finesse to enjoy now but the structure for durability to last up to 8 years.

2007 Waugh Cellars Petite Sirah, Dry Creek, Sonoma

petitesirah2_2.jpg

Harvest Date: October 20, 2007
Brix: 24.8
Ph: 3.40
% Alcohol: 14.5%
Production: 200 cases

The challenge for the 2007 Petite Sirah was creating balanced wines amidst the huge amounts of color, fruit flavor and tannin that Mother Nature threw our way throughout the growing season.  With our tireless vineyard management and soft hand in the winery though, we were able to pick the grapes at the height of ripeness and maturity, efforts which are fully on display with this wine.

We bottled 4 months earlier than usual to give it more aging time in its confined surroundings, offering a concentration of flavors that will blossom over time as it ages but as always, allows for immediate consumption.

When you open the wine you will find an explosion of fruit, chocolate and coffee on the nose and a deep, dark inky color very familiar to those who know Petite Sirah. It fills the palate with dark fruits and vanilla bean. With its incredibly long, delicate finish and sturdy acidic backbone, make sure you pair this wine with your favorite meat dish to maximize your enjoyment.
